 | | Keith Urban keith urbanPrice: $19.95 My review on release of the album. "Well, Keith's finally hit the mark, smack in the middle of it too. This is a great combination of ballads, uptempo, songs and the now obligatory instrumental.
He's finally found the combination of co-writers and producer (Matt Rollings) that nails the sounds he's best at. There's the chunky guitar-riff kicking cuts, like the successful US single "It's a Love Thing", and "I Wanna Be Your Man (Forever)", which features the backing vocals by Marty and Emily from the Dixie Chicks, and a brand new Aussie version of the Cajun holler. There's the smooth, rolling love ballads like "Your Everything", one of only three songs on the album he didn't have a hand in writing. Another is "If You Wanna Stay", a song that builds nicely only to fall away, reflecting the desperation and resignation of inconsistent love.
Keith has some help from mates like Steve Wariner, who wrote plays and sings backing vocals on the very funky "Where The Blacktop Ends". Consequently, he has a fistful of singles to pull from this album that I'm sure will see him become a resident on the American radio lists. I've been fortunate enough to see Keith work often. Not only here in Australia on his all too infrequent visits of late, but in Nashville where he's been slowly carving his niche. His live work has always remained electric, but now he's found a home in the studio as well, with Matt Rollings bringing in some inspired sounds from his top line studio players. Of note is some wonderful fiddle touches from Aubrie Haynie, and pedal steel from Paul Franklin and Bruce Bouton, with acoustic guitars by Biff Watson complementing Keith's own instrumental work. This is definitely Keith's finest work since first recording nearly 10 years ago, and Contemporary Country Music lovers should not miss out on this one. Go get 'em Keith."
